No-added-sugar version: 145 kcal and 10.6 g sugars per serving.

Values are for the first option listed in the ingredients; substitutions and variations change them. Carbs exclude fiber; energy uses the EU conversion factors (fiber at 2 kcal/g). Quantities and times are a starting point: adjust them to your taste. Two things don't change: poultry and ground meat must be cooked all the way through, and allergens — always check the labels.

Rico's note: Make a batch on Sunday and keep them in the fridge all week — they take care of a sweet craving without undoing anything.

Ingredients

  • 100 g (3½ oz) pitted dates — about 14 dates
  • 50 g (1¾ oz) oat flour
  • 30 g (1 oz) reduced-fat cocoa powder
  • 25 g (1 oz) chocolate protein powder — or 15 g reduced-fat cocoa
  • sugar, to taste — optional; no added sugar: sweetener to taste
  • vanilla extract, to taste — optional
  • 6 hazelnuts (7 g) — for the filling
  • 20 g (¾ oz) 85% dark chocolate — topping; no added sugar: sugar-free 85% dark chocolate
  • 1 tbsp milk or coconut oil (15 g / ½ oz) — for melting the chocolate
  • 10 g hazelnut or peanut pieces — for the topping
  • water or milk, as needed — to adjust the batter, if needed

Method

  1. In the blender, combine the dates, oat flour, cocoa powder and protein powder. Add the sugar and vanilla extract too, if you like.
  2. Blend until you have a smooth dough you can shape. If it's too dry, add a splash of water or milk.
